“Written for physicians, practice managers, unit directors, chief nursing officers, or anyone else serving as someone’s boss in a healthcare setting, this book is a powerful primer on successfully building teams and leading people.”

Why are some healthcare teams polluted by conflict, gossip, and lack of effort, while others work hard, get along, and wow patients?

Research says it’s the BOSS that makes the difference.

The most engaged and inspired healthcare teams don’t get that way by chance. They are led by physicians and managers who create the conditions necessary for people to thrive. Yet many leaders in healthcare settings lack insight into what employees must experience to be at their best, every day. Cure for the Common Leader translates the latest research on leadership, employee engagement, and motivation into SEVEN actions physicians and managers must take to engage and inspire healthcare teams. With more than 15 years of experience training leaders, Joe Mull packs each chapter with tips, ideas, strategies, and exercises to help physicians and managers get their teams firing on all cylinders.

"While healthcare undergoes a variety of changes, one thing remains the same the need for physicians and managers to build, lead, and sustain talented, dedicated teams. Mr. Mull has outlined exactly how to get there in one of the most practical healthcare leadership books you will ever read."
~Robert Maha, MD, MBA

Cure for the Common Leader What Physicians Managers Must Do to Engage Inspire Healthcare Teams eBook Joe Mull Reviews

The first thing that struck me about this book was that it wasn't just relavent to healthcare. I truly believe just about any profession can use this book as a way to bring the team they work with together. It is a very easy read and has a lot of great stories from Joe's experience as a trainer. I really enjoyed the oncology office one, it changed my whole perspective on my job and my purpose. If you want to find new ways to engage and inspire your healthcare team (or any profession) but don't have a lot of time to read manuals or attend seminars get this book and you won't be disappointed.
There are thousands of books out there for helping managers to be better managers. Most of them simply re-package the "same-old, same-old" management guru stuff. But this book is refreshingly different. Although Mr. Mull's primary audience is healthcare managers, as leader of a group of IT engineers, I find this book to be relevant for anyone who wants to manage their staff effectively. The book's outline is logical and it's content succinct yet without any pretentiousness. A quick read at only about 140 pages, managers should keep this one in their briefcase at all times for reference. The entire premise can be summed up in Mr. Mull's definition of leadership "Leadership is creating the conditions necessary for people to thrive." Buy it, read it, put it into practice. You'll be glad you did!
While the healthcare field is always evolving, one aspect remains constant the teams of people who provide care to patients. Joe emphasizes their importance in patient care by affirming, “…it is the shaping of the environment, relationships, and experiences of employees to create engagement that leads to the ideal patient experience.” He explains how to create this engagement in a concise manner and in simple steps. The necessity of each person having a powerful purpose as a member of the team and the ability to state it, as shared in chapter 6 was especially profound and quite simply, true. This is the step that I am most excited to utilize in my office.

Whether this is the first or fifteenth book (as it was for me) that you've read on employee engagement, this book has new ideas that will motivate you and get you started motivating others. I’d recommend Cure for a Common Leader to any manager in the healthcare field who aspires to offer an ideal patient experience. As an Audiologist, I strive for just this everyday and I know this book will help.
